The Anti-Gay Bill
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐠𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚
Since its inception in 2009, the proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda has been the subject of heated discussion. If the measure is passed, homosexuality would be severely punished, with life in prison for "aggravated homosexuality" and up to five years in jail for "promotion of homosexuality." The bill is still on the table and might someday be passed despite international outrage and pressure.
Several parliamentarians and religious groups in Uganda supported the bill when it was initially submitted in 2009 by Ugandan MP David Bahati, who saw homosexuality as a threat to traditional values and social standards.
